Manga Review: Nobunaga no Chef
Ken and two other Japanese chefs get thrown back into past. They arrive in the Sengoku Era (the Warring States Period; 1467-1573). Almost immediately, Ken’s presumed co-workers are killed by soldiers. The only survivor, Ken, is rescued by a female blacksmith, Natsu. Upon arriving in the Sengoku Era Ken lost almost all of his memories; the only thing he retained was his knowledge of cooking. To repay Natsu’s kindness Ken does the only thing he knows how to, cook. After seven months of cookin Ken attracts the attention of a pivotal figure of the era, Oda Nobunaga.
Manga Review: Makai Ouji: Devils and Realist
In 800 B.C. King Solomon gathered an army of demons with the power of his blessed ring. Thousands of years later in near-modern times his descendant, and bearer of his soul, is plunged into the power struggle of the same demons from the ancient army. Lucifer, like every powerful demon, must sleep for a hundred years in order to keep his longevity. In his absence a ruler is elected to control hell. This time, the one choosing Lucifer’s replacement is Solomon’s descendant, William Twining, who is a seemingly normal human who is a stubborn realist refuses to believe in the existence of God, demons, angels, and the like.
Manga Review: Reimei no Arcana
In a fantasy world, a princess, scorned by the royal family, is married off to the prince of a neighboring kingdom in order to form peace, albeit a shaky one. What sets apart this story from similar ones with the same premise is what the two accomplish in their union. They don’t fall madly in love, the end. No, they set off in separate ways to prevent war between their two nations. They try to save Ajin, otherwise known as “sub-people” as they are part human-part animal, from slavery and persecution. They fight against fate, one as the traitorous prince the other as a princess who can see the future.
Manga Review: Samurai Executioner
To put it lightly, Samurai Executioner is a spin-off of the famous manga, Lone Wolf and Cub. The same art style and storytelling in the latter is used in the former. However, the plot of the two are very different. As its name suggests Samurai Executioner is about a Samurai who’s profession is that of an executioner. Yamada Asaemon, is an honorable man who is greatly respected, and feared, for both his position and demeanor.
Not only is the manga is written with historical accuracy but the original terms are transliterated in the translation.
Manhwa Review: Ciel: The Last Autumn Story
In the world of Ciel: The Last Autumn Story Arc Dragons are linked to the forces of nature. They are, in essence, nature personified. The Fire Dragon gave humans language and magic. Now some of the dragons regret this decision as they now fear for the planet’s future. Upon his birth, the Sky Dragon, who can predict the future, predicted that the world would become a barren waste land. The dragons can’t help but think that this will be due to humans. With the turmoil between dragons and the political turbulence linked with having magic power Yvienne, her partner Lariatte, and their friends Daughter and January must do more than just study in the Lockwood Institute, a school for wizards and witches. They must battle demons, monsters, and other fowl creatures while being socially and politically active.
Manga Review: Otoyomegatari
Set in pre-modern days, in the time of the silk road, Otoyomegatari follows the married lives of Amira and Karluk. Amira was sent by her village to marry Karluk, a boy eight years younger than her, in an arranged marriage. In this new village, the culture is different and at times strange for Amira. Among this village filled with the decedents of nomadic herders Amira’s upbringing in semi-nomadic tribe shows, however she is not alone and she has all the support she could wish for. Amira now has a family based on a marriage based on love, respect, and trust. What more could anyone want?
Manga Review: Mushishi
What is like a plant and like an animal but neither? What is a mirage but also physical? The answer is mushi. Mushi are a third type of being. They are not plants they are not animals but a little of both. Few people can see these creatures and even fewer of these become mushishi, wanderers who protect the balance between Mushi and humans. It is best to think of them as wandering healers who are both in tune with humans and mushi. The mangaka often bases the mushi after folk lore and superstitions. By borrowing from such lore we get creatures who have evolved and ripened for countless generations before being used in this work.
